The Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Planner to support both nuclear facility and research operations within the Bethel Valley Operations Complex. The primary responsibility of the Planner is to ensure that all research and maintenance work is completed in a safe and compliant manner to meet established program goals within time and resource restrictions. This is accomplished by assisting the Facility Supervisor and ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with applicable NNFD division work control, change control, procurement, fabrication, and testing requirements. In addition to these responsibilities the candidate would also be expected to provide daily technical support for nuclear and radiochemical processing.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists Facility Supervisor in planning and executing work
  • Develop work packages for facility operations/maintenance activities in accordance with NNFD-004, Work Control
  • Schedules, coordinates, and assures satisfactory completion of research and maintenance work utilizing Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles which includes work scope definition, hazard identification and control, work package development and approval, preparing and leading the facility Plan of the Day, pre-job briefings, execution, post-maintenance testing, and incorporating lessons learned feedback into the system
  • Coordinates the inspection and testing of facility equipment conducted by support personnel including shielded casks, HEPA filters, hoods, gloveboxes, hoists, cranes, slings, etc.
  • Assists in the development, review, and V&V of facility procedures
  • Monitor the preventative maintenance schedule and ensure all equipment is properly maintained
  • Ensures Lock, Tag, Verify is initiated, approved, issued, and correctly implemented
  • Ensures that facility changes and modifications are performed in accordance with NNFD division procedures
  • Assists in the development of Job Hazard Evaluations (JHEs) for facility activities
  • Maintains knowledge of facility equipment and hot cell instrument status
  • Assists in the procurement of PPE, equipment, and tools to support research and maintenance activities ensuring compliance with NNFD procedures and Standing Orders
  • Provide daily technical support for nuclear and radiochemical processing

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in a technical field with a minimum of five years relevant nuclear operations experience or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience
  • Experience in scheduling and prioritization of research and maintenance tasks, strong customer service skills, procedure development, procurement of materials, and equipment analysis is required
  • This position also requires Rad Worker II training as well as respirator qualification
  • Candidate must be medically qualified for Rad Worker and respirator

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must have the ability to work as an active and contributing team member, manage time and work independently with minimum oversight, accomplish multiple tasks in a complex environment with attention to detail and thoroughness, possess an enthusiastic and positive work ethic, and possess the ability to handle potentially stressful situations
  • Exceptional teamwork skills, computer skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation with the ability to adjust to changing priorities are required
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrate good interpersonal skills, and work well as a team member
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
