L3 Technologies seeks a Director of Engineering for it's Advanced Laser Systems Technology (ALST) operation located in Orlando, Florida. ALST is a world leader in the development and production of advanced Laser rangefinders, designators, targeting systems and components and supports all branches of the United States Military, allied nations, OEM customers, border security and development labs.

The Director of Engineering is an integral member of the senior staff and will act with latitude to develop an engineering organization capable of supporting the short and long-term strategic needs of the business. The incumbent will have responsibility for all engineering tasks, budgets and schedules.


. Responsible for organizational development and leadership of the technical professionals and required support staff within the engineering department, to successfully achieve company and customer objectives on time and within budget.

. Establish processes, procedures and control metrics required to ensure an agile, high performance engineering organization.

. Support the company's strategic planning process and objectives to include technology road maps and win discriminator identification in support of new product development

. Develop, coordinate, lead, and execute plans to aid in the achievement of company goals, including driving compliance to business requirements.

. Define lab and test facility needs and prepare associated CAPX requirements.

. Oversee the Systems Engineering, Integration and Test (SEIT) function during development and the transition into production of Laser range finders and Laser designators.

. Ensures the integrity of documentation of designs, iterations, layouts, detailed part and assembly drawings, models, BOM's and configuration management per internal, safety and quality requirements.

. Work directly with Program Manager(s) to execute project plans and perform project monitoring and control to ensure execution within allocated budget and schedule.

. Coordinate with Quality and Manufacturing to ensure a low-cost producible design and support the transition from Development to full rate production.

. Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects.

. Establish an effective manpower planning, hiring and control process, including recruiting and hiring the appropriate mix of talent to staff programs and projects.

. Responsible for identifying training needs and developing training plans for the people within the organization.

. Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement programs.

. Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in accordance with company values.

. Perform job duties in a manner that maintains compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.

. All other assignments as required.


. Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or System Engineering from an accredited university or college; Master's Degree preferred.

. 10 years of experience in a military Laser or electro-optical engineering and manufacturing environment, with a minimum of 5 years of recent management/supervision experience.


. Proven ability to manage/lead in an engineering development and transition to production environment.

. Experience with specification development, analysis, design, integration and test of systems, Laser systems, optical systems, infrared systems, and/or imaging systems.

. Working knowledge of engineering management and system engineering.

. Familiar with project planning, tracking tools and metrics.

. Must be able to effectively flow down goals into measurable tasks to subordinates and manage organizational performance.

. Proven success in a fast paced development and manufacturing environment and possess a willingness to take ownership, accept accountability, and thrive under pressure.

. Possess exceptional communication (both oral and written) and listening skills, with a strong orientation to details, and the ability to make accurate, informed decisions.

. Strong relationship building skills at all levels of an organization and the ability to work effectively across functions.

. Must be able to provide effective coaching and mentoring to develop a high performing and collaborative team.

. Demonstrated ability to make presentations to large audiences including customers, government personnel and senior management team members.

. Expertise in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.


. United States citizenship or authorization to work in the United States is required.

. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid U.S. Passport.

. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

. Able to travel nationally/internationally on an as needed basis.

. Able to work weekends and evenings as required to meet company objectives.
