Purpose
Within Field Medical Affairs, the Executive Director will manage the activities of the field-based Medical Liaison (ML) teams and compliance within the Medical Affairs Department. Leads, develops, implements and oversees Medical Liaison Team strategies that: (1) Manage key and strategic opinion leader/academic institutions and other key and strategic health care provider/organization relationships, specifically with the provision of timely and up to date scientific and medical information relevant to Novo Nordisk's products or research activities; (2) ensure awareness and improve competitive positioning of Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI) products; (3) ensure personal and career development of the team, and (4) manage coordination and cooperation between the field-based Medical Liaison team and other NNI units and other personnel; to maximize effectiveness and ensure the objectives of the team are met. As a member of the Medical Affairs leadership team, the position participates in defining the Medical/Scientific strategy to significantly contribute to the growth of the business.

Relationships
Position reports to an Vice President, Field Medical Affairs & Stakeholder Strategy. Has direct supervisory responsibility for field-based Medical Liaison Field Directors in the East half of United States, and assists in providing strategic direction to internal operations staff. Also, may work directly with Medical Liaisons to support external relationships with key physicians; nurse practitioners; pharmacists, blood bank staff; academic institutions; managed care organizations and health maintenance organizations (HMOs), as needed. Additional key internal relationships are with Medical Affairs Directors and Clinicians, Medical Education Associate Director/Director, Clinical Medical Regulatory (CMR), Legal Government & Quality Affairs (LGQ), Human Resources, Marketing, Sales, and other field personnel. Directs and manages the function through lower management levels where scope and complexity of responsibility requires the integration of multiple departments.

Essential Functions
COMPLIANCE: Conducts random audits of the ML team one stop shop (OSS) in conjunction with the Novo Nordisk Compliance Officer. Develops and leads the compliance training/assessment of ML team. Monitors industry practices, trends to ensure Novo Nordisk Medical Affairs policies/procedures are in line with current industry standards. Oversees compliance within the Medical Affairs Department (in conjunction with the Legal and Compliance Departments). COORDINATION/COMMUNICATION AND ADMINISTRATION: Develops and manages interpersonal relationships to influence decisions. Represents medical liaison management team at internal and external meetings. Leads and ensures that the most up-to-date information on the therapeutic area and NNI clinical plans and study results, product support letters, and the Marketing and Sales product plan and tactics is made available to the field-based Medical Liaison Associate Directors/Directors. Manages and profiles potential contacts. Manages monthly highlights from supervised Field Director reports. Represents medical liaison management team on both internal and external projects. Evaluates and prioritizes key issues and risks to attainment of the department goals and objectives, in order to focus the Operations team on activities that enhance department success. Review and audit direct report expense reports. Manage direct reports in the tracking of budgets and expenditures. Ultimately responsible for managing the budget actual spend versus latest estimate (LE) by status reports, meetings, and influence of other members. Reviews, evaluates, and channels information to the appropriate NNI personnel, if needed, and provide timely responses to requests from the Medical Liaison Associate Directors/Directors. Work with the field-based Regional, managed markets (MM), and integrated healthcare system (IHS) teams to improve and develop new relationships with thought-leaders in specialty areas that are affected by NNI products. Help define mutual areas of interest and potential areas of collaboration. Manages direct reports in the provision of responses to unsolicited requests for medical information from healthcare professionals, consumers, and colleagues. MANAGEMENT: Proactively assesses performance of direct reports and helps guide in their continued development. Own training plan and training for field medical, in collaboration with medical strategy & operations (MSO) and other relevant functions. Ensure clear and strategic alignment of field plans and activities with the Medical Product Plans (MPP) owned by in-house Medical Director. Positive and proactive leadership influence on strategy and organization development within medical affairs leadership team (MALT). STRATEGIC PLANNING: Oversees and manages the feedback from Field Directors to assist Medical and Marketing and Sales to develop strategies and tactics that will (1) improve strategic planning and (2) expand and improve the quality of clinical research; (3) increase accuracy of medical and marketing assessments; (4) improve the competitive positioning of NNI products. Oversees therapeutic area disease and treatment concepts that will (1) become the basis of Medical Liaison field/based activities, (2) be adopted by thought leaders and academic institutions, and (3) support the use of Novo Nordisk products. Defines and implement tactics that will allow for the timely acceptance of these concepts.

Development of People
Supervisory: Ensure that reporting personnel have 3P forms with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.

Physical Requirements
50-75% overnight travel required.
Home based role in ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, AL or FL.

Qualifications

  • A M.D., PharmD., or other doctorate level degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years progressive pharmaceutical industry experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years previous ML management experience required
  • 3 years of experience as a Medical Scientific Liaison or related area or manager in a related field required
  • Direct experience in diabetes or related clinical research areas preferred
  • Proven track record of success, especially in the area of establishing relationships with opinion leaders and in team management
