Job Title: Medical Coordinator

Department: First Aid

Employment

Status: Full-time/Regular/Exempt

Qualifications:

This person must have an interest in medicine and desire to work in the medical field. He/she must be sensitive and able to discern a students' medical needs. This individual must be a team player who works well with a wide variety of people. Must be EMT (basic level) certified, paramedic or LPN. Must be able to work autonomously, must be able to prioritize, must be flexible and must be able to case manage the medical needs of students.

Reports To: Nursing Supervisor

Job Summary: To ensure that each of White's residents has his or her total health care needs met in an efficient and practical manner. Must demonstrate sensitivity to our service population's cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and needs.

Basic Responsibilities

Maintain accurate medical records on each student

Assess minor illnesses and injuries and administer first aid

Case Manage students' medical appointments

Learn computerized software, Evolv and document all medical, dental and vision related notes..

Communicate with medical doctors, nurse, staff members and students

Assist medical doctors during doctor's on site visits

Case Manage all prescription medications and supplies

Conduct initial intake medical screenings with new students, which includes collecting medical history, showing nutritional video, documenting sexual health education, obtaining vital signs, conducting vision, hearing and urine screenings, documenting necessary computerized charting and arranging all follow up medical, dental, and vision appointments.

Serve as a member of support staff

Respond to medical emergencies

Correspond with counties on medical issues pertaining to individual students

Perform other duties as requested by Residential Director

Properly discard of discontinued medicines.

Purchase medical supplies for First Aid and cottages

Educate students and staff in current and relevant health issues

Check medical records and supplies at each cottage, and Refocus Unit on a regular basis

Conduct pre-release physicals with each student

General cleaning of work areas and equipment

Assist and maintain up to date immunization records-will require learning access to state computerized immunization data bank.

Assist with administering staff TB.

Ensure state board of health and DCS regulations for residential care facilities are maintained.

Provide orientation for new Child Care Workers.

Develop/facilitate alternative programs for studentsasthma, diabetes, venereal diseases, personal hygiene etc. (as needed)

Supervision, Knowledge, and Ability

This position requires a person to work with a minimum of supervision. Must be organized and dependable.

  • Must maintain current certification as EMT (Basic level), paramedic, or LPN

Must be able to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Must be trustworthy and able to handle White's funds.

Must be able to communicate (both talk and listen) to students, houseparents, referring agencies, and physicians.

Must be able to write legibly; take concise notes; and write letters to referring agencies and physicians.

Must be willing to attend workshops, school, and other types of training to improve job skills and expertise.

This person must be able to stay calm in crisis situations and assess medical emergencies.

Working Conditions

80 hours per pay (bi-weekly), 12 hour shifts, every other weekend, set rotating work schedule

Attend work regularly

Be prompt to work each day and be available to assist in medical emergencies.

Will be "on duty" every third weekend and one night each week.

Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to transport students to doctor's appointments.

Must be able to spend extended hours at hospitals and emergency rooms to assist students coming out of surgery and medical emergencies.

Physical Demands of Position

Must be able to work with student's medical problems. This includes exposure to bodily fluids.

Must be able to assist in the physical handling of ill students...lifting, carrying, escorting, etc.

Must be able to clean work area.
