The Role

This position will work as a member of Tesla's Vehicle Engineering Test Group to coordinate & execute Passive Safety Crash Test related activities conducted both in-house and at external test sites. The primary objective of this role is to coordinate and execute Passive Safety testing in accordance with test plans and test procedures and communicate test results to internal engineering teams for successful validation to Tesla Due Care and Regulatory Compliance requirements.


The successful candidate for this position must have a broad background in automotive Safety testing with extensive experience with Static, Quasi-Static, and Dynamic Safety tests, including sled testing and full vehicle crash testing.

. Create safety test plans and execute tests for on time completion.

. Lead & coordinate all safety testing according to Tesla test plans and test procedures.

. Lead detailed design reviews (Post-Test) & assist Design Engineering and CAE Teams in root-cause analysis.

. Identify concerns and work with design engineers for corrective action of issues identified during Safety testing.

. Ensure on-time completion of Test Reports, Test Procedures, and Test Plans.

. Work with internal engineering teams and external suppliers to develop and validate performance of components, systems and validation activities.

. Organize countermeasure validation testing to confirm corrective action resolution.

. Design, develop and validate Tesla Due Care test procedures and set appropriate judgment criteria.

. Participate in new program reviews to provide feedback on vehicle safety performance.

. Utilize and coordinate team resources to ensure testing activities are supported in-house and at external test sites.

. Support in development of Passive Safety Test team's budget for the test rigs and the execution of tests at external test labs.

Essential Skills:

. Extensive experience in coordinating a team of engineers and technicians for Safety tests.

. Extensive knowledge of all FMVSS, ECE, IIHS, USNCAP, and EuroNCAP Test regulations & protocols.

. Experience with interpretation of injury assessment values and various Star ratings (US NCAP/Euro NCAP/China NCAP/Japan NCAP) as well as the IIHS and RCAR rating system.

. Knowledge of Real-world Safety fundamentals.

. Broad experience working in cross functional teams to drive product development and a demonstrated ability to influence direction of design based on safety test results.

. The Ideal candidate will have prior experience leading Crash and Safety Testing at a component/system/vehicle level at a major OEM.

. Experience in analyzing data using available tools (HyperWorks, DiaDAM).

. Understanding of data acquisition systems (DTS/SoMat) for vehicle data collection.

. Experience with High Speed Camera videography equipment.

. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute requirement to establish effective working relationships with Tesla engineering and test teams, outside test labs and others within and outside Tesla organization.

. Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines.

. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master's degree preferred; or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability.

. A minimum of 5-10 years of automotive experience in Safety Testing.

. Candidates must have the ability and willingness to travel (Up to 20%).
