Job Description
As a Software Engineering Manager for Rockwell Automation, you will have the opportunity to manage a software engineering team developing industry-leading software known for its innovation and usability. You will be responsible for the continued development and motivation of a highly productive team that consistently delivers exceptional product to our customers. Responsibilities include support of engineering process, including requirements definition, system design, implementation, design verification, test, and release. You will function as a key member of an international, intra-business product engineering team, participating in the creation and execution of product development, test and delivery strategies.

This position is a technology and team leader who will evolve software products and manage a team of 10 or more software development and test engineers. This role includes management oversight of software development projects from requirements through delivery, and continual advancement of our software engineering capability. Integral to these functions is the responsibility for developing a highly performing software engineering team that is steeped in Lean/Agile principles and is focused on delivering a quality product.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for building and leading a team of software engineering professionals in Mayfield Heights who possess deep knowledge of the product development process, associated development environments, supporting tools, applications, and RA products.
  • Lead the team to define, develop, test, support, and deliver system level value to our customers.
  • Ensure that the development team remains abreast of technology advances and promotes their usage in products and processes.
  • Recruit and promote the career development of team personnel.
  • Drive the high performance culture of the team and develop a world-class engineering organization.
  • Create and foster the vision and the metrics driven strategy for continuous improvement.
  • Support process improvements by staying current with and adopting best engineering practices utilizing Agile, Kanban, Lean, Continuous Integration/Delivery, and other pragmatic methodologies.
  • Foster a climate of diversity, inclusion, and teamwork - rewarding and recognizing performance that supports Rockwell Automation values.
  • Establish and maintain peer relationships across Rockwell Automation's technical communities. Demonstrate a receptiveness to new ideas and a willingness to work with other teams outside of the immediate organization.
  • Understand the business impact of customer satisfaction and appropriately prioritize team and project activities.
  • Partner with Product Management and other stakeholders to identify opportunities to improve the user experience.
  • Identify competitive threats and new technologies that can be a differentiator in the market. Provide sound solutions to cost, performance and time to market tradeoffs.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Typically requires a minimum of eight years of experience in a software engineering product development environment or related technical areas
  • Typically requires a minimum of five years of technical management experience

Desired Qualifications

  • MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience across the software development life cycle, particularly an understanding of the importance of customer intimacy, requirements work and software usability.
  • Proven change agent with the ability to nurture self-managed, self-organized team structures.
  • Ability to understand the technical work and the functionality of the product - sufficient to evaluate staff performance and represent the functionality of the product in various settings.
  • Proven decision making skills that enable getting things done and shipping products.
  • Strong leadership experience in Agile and Lean development practices
  • Strong leadership experience in test automation as it relates to software engineering.
  • Critical thinking regarding relative investment in near term product development and long term, strategic development.
  • Ability to manage in a matrixed team environment, with a willingness to collaborate, share best practices, responsibilities, and workload.
  • An interest in technology, particularly with respect to next generation software technology.
  • Knowledge and experience with alternative software development best practices.
  • Direct experience with the Industrial Automation industry
  • Direct experience collaborating with local and international technical development teams
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
