City: Chicago, IL

Major/Degree: Decision Sciences, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Engineering or related majors

Duration: One-year, part-time internship. 20 hours/week during school and 30 hours/week during summer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide statistical and financial analysis to evaluate performance of railcar components to support Engineering, planning, and supplier decisions
  • Leverage advanced analytics and statistical models to evaluate railcar asset health and effectiveness of maintenance programs, such as condition based maintenance (CBM)
  • Develop metrics, reporting and dashboards for the Operations/Engineering leadership and railroad customers
  • Support Engineering with data analysis for the Field Trial process by evaluating performance of new designs or new manufacturers of components applied to TTX railcars
  • Publish component reliability reports as part of TTX's annual supplier evaluation (SECO) process
  • Continuous improvement and automation of manual or recurring analytical requests
  • Training and support to enable self-service analytics for internal customers
  • Leverage available tools (ie SAS Server, Python) to streamline and automate processes
  • Typical analyses include: failure rate, cost per mile, average mileage, life cycle cost, and life curves (survival curves, Weibull distributions)
  • Primary data sources include component repair billing, mileage, railcar asset characteristics, and industry wayside detector readings and industry maintenance alerts
  • Utilize a variety of software tools depending on the business need or question: SQL, SAS EG, Python, Excel Power Query, VBA/Macros or Tableau

Qualifications:

A customer service perspective to provide accurate and reliable analyses. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from key customers and managers.

Strong technical and functional skills. Experience utilizing SQL, advanced Excel skills, VBA/Macros, Python, Tableau and statistical software programs such as SAS, R or other similar tools.

Experience in problem solving abilities to quantify the magnitude of issues, understand contributing factors, and actively support the team to investigate root causes to resolve issues

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

Understanding of data management, data integration and transformation, ie joining and integrating multiple data sources
