Research Computing at Harvard Medical School (HMS), is a growing and evolving group of technologists, biologists and informatics experts working together to build and support a cutting edge computational environment for Life Sciences research across the Longwood Medical Area. You will be surrounded by and interact with world-class researchers who will challenge you to solve ever-changing and complex data and computing problems. We are looking for a motivated full-stack DevOps Engineer with demonstrated experience in high performance computing (HPC) in scientific research. Successful

candidates will have expertise in a subset of the technologies and skills outlined below.

You will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the HMS HPC and integrated scientific computing environment. You will work with the technical leadership in Research Computing and HMS IT Infrastructure to architect and implement HPC and scientific computing infrastructure and services that sustainably address the needs to the HMS Research Scientists. This is a "doing" role and will share ownership and responsibility for tasks and project across the larger team. Working with leadership, you will explore new ways to address the computational and informatics needs of the HMS Research Community. The successful candidate will work closely with the Research Computing Consultants, a team of scientifically trained specialist to deliver an extremely high level of computational support and service to the HMS Research Community.

The Senior DevOps Engineer is tasked with building modern, compostable, sustainable systems and configurations, using up-to-date best practices and technologies such as policy driven provisioning of bare-metal-as-a-service, containerized services, fully automated/CI driven system configuration, reporting monitoring and trending. Additional job responsibilities include, but are not limited to large scale system automation beyond the specific scope of HPC, using the latest DevOps technologies such as containers for application deployment and reproducibility, distributed storage and key-store systems, configuration management and orchestration.

This position has a major long term focus to help drive the "push to the cloud", both within and outside of the context of HPC, ideally introducing technologies that serve as a stepping stone to a future of a cloud-based infrastructure, while maintaining the sort of on-site response and ability HMS researchers and faculty are accustomed to, as well modernizing and maintaining existing systems as well as acting as a mentor and resource for other team members.

Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IS/IT, Engineering or equivalent work experience and 5 or more years of related professional experience. Additional Qualifications Experience in Life Sciences preferred. Development experience in 2 languages. Open source, and source management experience. High performance computing, and experience with large data systems. Relational databases database experience preferred. Networking, firewalls, NAT and packet filtering experience desired. Experience with storage systems; SANs and NAS including iSCSI, NFS, and FC. Scientific research experience strongly desired. Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation. . Development experience in at least 2 languages (java, C, bash, Python, perl, Ruby, UNIX Shell Scripting)

. Leverage open source

. Understand of Cloud technologies such as AWS and OpenStack

. Source management git/mercurial/svn

. Automation and configuration management (chef/puppet/ansible/custom scripting)

. Hardware knowledge of storage, network, and servers

..NIX/Linux system administration and fundamentals (redhat/debian)

. System monitoring and configuration (zabbix/nagios/ganglia/cloudwatch)

. Performance tuning and troubleshooting complex systems

. Relational databases

. SANs and NAS including iSCSI, NFS and FC

. General Networking skills (Layer 2 & 3 switches, TCP/IP . . .)

Domain Specific Expertise:

. Bioinformatics software experience

. Management of large data sets

. Medical Informatics or Healthcare data experience

. Protected data, HIPAA, Health Information Privacy experience

. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation; NGS, Microscopy, Mass Spectrometry, etc.
