Highly motivated individual who will work as a part of a 24x7 IT Production Operations team with primary focus on application database administration (APP DBA). APP DBA is a technology professional who can develop and maintain enterprise class ERP systems. The APP DBA must have a thorough understanding of Oracle and application products, as well as Linux and UNIX operating systems and associated server hardware. The person must also understand the role of database administration within an operational framework and be able to implement a long-term plan for maintaining the database environments as well as accommodating growth and change. The APP DBA should also be familiar with the software development lifecycle and able to work with project teams to successfully implement new business information systems. This position requires a bachelors degree in a related field or equivalent work experience and reports to a CIS Production Operations Manager.

POSITION-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages databases, including security, space management, database migrations, database and system tuning, database refreshes, backups and restores, and user resource management.
  • Maintains production databases to ensure integrity, performance, accessibility, and recoverability of data.
  • Production Support including rotating On Call duties with other team members.
  • Develops long-term strategy for historical data retention and archival plan for storage needs; defines data retention, backup, and recovery for all data.
  • Recommends and implements new RDBMS features or software enhancements
  • Coordinates with development teams to ensure that implementation regarding infrastructure security are fully understood and can be leveraged.
  • Troubleshoots and tunes for system and performance problems; identifies and resolves information flow, content issues, and may assist with transformation of business requirements into logical data models;
  • Works in an operations environment with project managers in planning and directing multiple projects. These projects consist of coordinating RDBMS SDLC from the development environment to staging environment through the build process and ultimately migration to production.
  • Works with other infrastructure personnel to design proper hardware infrastructure.
  • Works independently without supervision. Candidate should also be able to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Has excellent written and verbal skills and the ability to communicate with users of RDBMS databases.
  • Establishes, monitors, and enforces database standards
  • Acts as liaison between Production Operation DBAs and Solution Delivery/Enterprise Architecture teams for new projects and technologies
  • Mentors Production Operation DBAs on database technologies and methodologies
  • Creates best in class standard processes
  • Reviews and edits all internal department documentation
  • Audits configuration of database environments per standards
  • Assists in upgrade planning and procedures
  • Provides input and trend information for database capacity planning
  • Coordinates workloads of senior DBA staff
  • Serves as primary contact for the resolution of issues impacting application availability.
  • Completes proactive/scheduled maintenance as required.
  • Incident Management
  • Provide on and off-hours support for responsible applications.
  • Tests changes, upgrades and new products, ensuring systems will operate correctly in current and future environments.
  • Works within current processes to ensure ownership of issues and document and improves upon troubleshooting knowledge within team.
  • Identifies hardware, layered product, and system network problems.
  • Researches and reports software bugs to the Development Departments.
  • Manages and coordinates resolutions of complex production support issues through completion.
  • Works directly with development and QA departments to complete installations successfully with minimal impact to customers.
  • Works with developers on assurance of properly documented support procedures.
  • Develops measurements and report on key service-level metrics.
  • Provides manager feedback on trend analysis for continual improvement and provide solution options for any gaps within support teams.
  • Recognized subject matter expert. Concerned with problems that have a direct and important effect on business programs and results
  • Routinely called upon to apply/demonstrate mastery of existing and emerging technologies, practices, and processes
  • May direct major projects or programs with significant business impact within department, functional area

GENERAL PRODUCTION OPERATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Think clearly and abstractly, in high pressure situations, to resolve critical issues
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Articulate and provide convincing arguments around business/technical decisions or direction.
  • Adapt response to a given situation and appropriately articulate technical language with the customer.
  • Perform most tasks with minimal direction from management. Be flexible and willing to work off-hours.
  • Liaison between architecture, application development, project managers, network infrastructure, server engineering, and support teams.
  • Represent the team or group at technical and status meetings as required.
  • Lead technical discussions to determine new application developments and/or changes within current application infrastructure.
  • Assist in the development of application project-specific work plans and the level to which tasks can be performed.
  • Timely communication of concerns and issues that may affect the production environment, project schedule and/or user acceptance of the developed application to product manager and project manager.
  • Respond to critical events after business hours.
  • Troubleshoot issues with existing or developed systems, and works with the appropriate resources to resolve them.
  • Perform and assist others with root cause analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborate and consult with key technical staff to design solutions that meet business requirements.
  • Maintain status of issues and their resolutions in the ticketing system.
  • Participate in relevant post mortems following high severity issues.
  • Adhere to change management and system development lifecycle policies and procedures.
  • Serve as resource to implement projects plans addressing objectives, timeframes, preliminary testing and post production support of complex software applications.
  • Serve as a project resource to successfully complete assigned tasks on time and on budget.
  • Perform audits of the environment to identify deficiencies of standards, performance and availability.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery planning and testing.
  • Maintain current Disaster Recovery documentation and create new documentation, as necessary.
  • Maintain and increase knowledge and proficiency of appropriate technical competencies.
  • Stay current on new technology and propose ideas to the team and management that improve efficiency or effectiveness.
  • Work with vendors to evaluate products and solutions that might improve or enhance the services provided by the team.
  • Prepare and assist with business case documentation for capital investments in new technologies.
  • Execute technical presentations to technical, non-technical, and executive audiences.
  • Prepare status reports for current activities and projects.
  • Prepare reports regarding the operational state of the environment for managerial review.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to respond to critical events after business hours.
Qualifications:

  • Typically requires BS/BA in related discipline. Generally 8+ years experience in related field; certification required in some areas - OR -MS/MA and generally 5-7 years experience in related field; certification required in some areas
  • Experience with Oracle 10G, 11G and 12C including RAC and ASM
  • Experience with both UNIX and Linux environments
  • Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite or PeopleSoft Application Administration Experience with Scripting
  • Understanding of relational database principles.
  • Understanding of network, Storage Area networks and backup applications
  • Ability to approach database administration with a consistent and structured methodology
  • Analyst skills for understanding business and technical requirements and forming appropriate database solutions
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic understanding of the systems implementation life cycle and business environment
