DevOps Manager/AWS Cloud Expert (Full Time)

Location: Boston Massachusetts Country: United States of America

This well-respected small company is seeking to hire a Senior DevOps Manager to tackle its toughest infrastructure problems and drive technical excellence at all levels. Preference for this person to live in the Boston area but 100% remote is possible.

Job Summary

The Senior DevOps Manager works with senior management to support execution of the organization's vision and oversees a team of Site Reliability Engineers to deliver to it. The Senior DevOps Manager is a person who cares deeply about the infrastructure side of operations and is committed to our culture of excellent customer service. The ideal candidate thrives being the person who interfaces between the dev team and the server maintenance/hosting team, understands technology deeply at both the server level and at the development level, understands where the gaps often are between these two, and is excited about filling those gaps and taking proactive steps to prevent web application emergencies from ever happening.

The Senior DevOps Manager has expert knowledge of the AWS ecosystem and offering. The Senior DevOps Manager is deeply familiar with a variety of monitoring solutions (both server and web applications), understands in depth, and is able to set up, configure, and use these tools to identify potential gaps and stop them from ever becoming an issue.

The Senior DevOps Manager is an excellent communicator, able to eliminate jargon when necessary, yet able to dive deep into technical details when working with development staff. The Senior DevOps Manager takes complete ownership of the infrastructure design and implementation of projects and ensures that no stone is left unturned to avoid risks. The Senior DevOps Manager understands that quality, reliability and performance are the primary metrics of success for this role.

A successful Senior DevOps Manager is expected to:

  • Be deeply familiar with AWS cloud environment and its ecosystem, and engaged in ongoing continuous education as AWS evolves
  • Be fluent in AWS cost management and experienced in optimizing cost structures
  • Be passionate about building automation tools on AWS cloud infrastructure
  • Be comfortable with ambiguity and accept the challenge of figuring it out; the successful candidate is more than a coder-the candidate knows how to deliver and works well with a cross-functional team to design and implement a solution
  • The successful candidate must value repeatability and automation; automated testing and infrastructure as code are a way of life
  • Be accountable for application uptime, infrastructure scalability, flexibility, and costs
  • Participate in an escalation path for 24/7 support of customer-facing systems
  • Participate in blameless post-mortem culture and embrace iterative improvement
  • Maintain an infrastructure production environment spanning more than four datacenters and more than 100 Servers
  • Display technical leadership and oversight of implementation and deployment planning, system integration, ongoing data validation processes, quality assurance, delivery, operations, and sustainability of technical solutions
  • Identify trending gaps or issues in day-to-day performance of all website applications and third-party vendors including by active monitoring, alert management, reporting, and process reviews
  • Identify technical and process improvement opportunities and socialize/advocate to get them implemented
  • Work closely with the other Managers in release planning, preparation, validation, post- release monitoring, and ongoing monitoring
  • Resolve conflicts by demonstrating leadership and appropriate decision-making competencies

Qualified candidates must have:

  • 5+ years of DevOps Manager or related experience (AWS) with gradually increasing responsibilities and a demonstrated understanding of DevOps and technical quality control processes, artifacts, and tools
  • Ability to drive to big picture goals and milestones while valuing and maintaining a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to quickly identify and drive to the optimal solution when presented with a series of constraints
  • Demonstrated experience or ability in people management, strategic planning, risk management, change management, and project management
  • Full understanding of software development life cycle best practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of developers, product owners, and subject matter experts
  • Expert technical understanding of the intersection of development and operations (DevOps), monitoring and management tools, and deployment processes and tools
  • High level understanding in the areas of web application programming, content management systems, API, databases, and system design
  • Strong sense of personal responsibility and accountability for delivering high quality work, both personally and at a team level
  • Must be US citizen or Permanent Resident for this direct-hire, Full time position (no C2C).

Preferred experience:

  • Experience in the publishing industry is a plus
  • Experience on an agile development team using continuous integration
  • Experience coding within Git source-controlled environments
  • Knowledge of automated infrastructure provisioning through Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Practical experience in a functional or object-oriented language (eg C, C++, Java, Python, Go, Perl and/or Ruby) and comfortable adapting scripts in Bash, Ruby and Python
  • Linux systems administration experience
  • Experience with one or more of the following configuration management systems: Ansible, Chef, Fabric, Puppet, Salt
