Optical Engineer

Position Overview The Optical Engineer is responsible for carrying out optical related product design, research, analysis, testing, documentation and programming of optical modules and systems. This role will work to develop advanced, next generation technologies for our long-haul optical systems.

This role works closely with other engineers and production associates. This role is a critical technical interface of engineering support to our customers. Responsibilities Analyze, evaluate, debug, test and characterize optical modules and systems.

Draft and execute data collection and characterization protocols. Use, program and maintain a sophisticated array of automated data collection tools, including robotic arms, mechanical rails, rotation stages, lighting controls, etc. Draft clear summary characterization reports for analysis by engineers across many disciplines.

Continuously research unfamiliar technologies and use this knowledge to educate others within the group. Lead and mentor filter technicians and management as it relates to writing Fiber Bragg Gratings. Ability to drive complex problems to root cause and implement effective solutions which make both engineering and business sense.

Continuously focus on LEAN manufacturing principles to find ways for efficiencies within the department. Other duties and special projects as assigned. Qualifications BS in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Physics required. MS preferred.

In depth experience with trouble shooting and problem solving as it relates to optical hardware. Optical test experience in a lab or factory environment. Experiences of particular interest include: Knowledge of Fiber Bragg Grating (DFH, GFF) technology and application in long haul fiber optic communication systems Camera performance evaluations Laser performance or characterization of illumination systems Programming experience involving image processing or computer vision, motion control and factory automation Above average attention to detail.

Demonstrates excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently with little supervision. Ability to accurately input information into multiple systems, including the Company's Oracle ERP system in support of manufacturing processes. Ability to translate, statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills are imperative as there is interaction with both internal and external customers. Regular attendance onsite is required.
