Applications Developer (Full Time)

Location: Washington, DC Country: United States of America

Act as a key member within the IT team at the University of Mary Washington. Activities will include supporting enterprise information systems through the development, implementation, and maintenance of software applications in support of the business needs of the Enterprise Application Services department and the University.

General Description of Position

  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into technical specifications to be developed or enhanced.
  • Work directly with the business or customer Proxy to ensure solution specifications are valid, testable and meet business needs.
  • Develop and release functional code and enhancements based upon departmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot system problems and issues.
  • Participate in peer code reviews and provide technical oversight of other developers' code, as appropriate.
  • Document and execute unit tests for code developed.
  • Collaborate and share knowledge with the team and across the organization.
  • Function proactively in planning activities leading up to planned project release dates.
  • Work collaboratively with the team and customers while working independently to accomplish assigned tasks.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications to successfully perform their work:

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and good time management skills
  • Proficient in SQL querying large relational databases/RDBMS (examples include Oracle 12c, MySQL, SQL Server) or nonrelational databases.
  • Solid understanding of and experience in the full software development life cycle.
  • Ability to produce documentation to departmental quality standards.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to deliver results.

Preferred KSA's/Competencies/Qualifications to successfully perform the work:

  • Understanding of web technologies, to include HTML/XHTML, Javascript, XML.
  • Hands-on experience of secure authentication methodologies and tools.
  • Proficiency in working directly with non-technical and business customers in a supportive role.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, MIS or a related field (or equivalent combination of education, work experience, certification).

Required Experience:

  • Recent IT experience in the analysis and development of software within a database-centric environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of data integration methods including web Service/API creation and consumption using SOAP/REST/JSON, etc.
  • Progressive hands-on experience with at least one of the following languages: Java, PL/SQL, PHP, C+.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with large, enterprise-wide ERP systems (specifically ellucian Banner).
  • Experience working within an Agile (non-phased) software development environment.
  • Experience working with reporting tools, specifically Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, Power BI.
