Digital gurus have an exciting opportunity for a Development manager to come and join a highly successful education technology company based in London. This client is going through an exciting digital journey at present.

You will inherit a small but very productive development team, with future scope to grow this team further, as the development manager you will be expected to still be hands on and have a real passion for coding but also be able to manage stakeholders and help set strategies and road-maps and be a key influencer within the business.

This role would suit a Senior developer or tech lead looking to make the step into development management, or a Development manager who is used to managing small teams and growing them out.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver projects in an efficient and timely manner
  • Write well designed, efficient code
  • Coordinate software maintenance and bug fixes
  • Comply with industry standards
  • Organise and carry out technical support where required
  • Manage the allocation of workload across the team, ensuring staff are appropriately trained and supported
  • Review the performance of team members, including appraisals, probationary reviews, and the identification of training needs
  • Be responsible for recruiting positions within the team
  • Work strategically with the Development team to design, plan and manage the building of new software and maintenance of Legacy code
  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department
  • Use Agile methodologies where appropriate to lead projects, including drawing up requirement documents, and sprint project planning
  • Implement and maintain a testing framework and staging server whereby new code and revisited Legacy code are comprehensibly tested
  • Liaise with other business teams on key projects
  • Advise the company on technical projects, ideas and issues
  • Invest time in researching and acquiring new technologies to ensure that tech products are kept up to date

Skills

Essential:

  • Proven industry experience in a development role
  • Experience in leading and organising technical and applications development
  • Experience using Python
  • Knowledge of web technologies; HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • Good SQL knowledge, preferably MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Comfortable working with Linux (Ubuntu), bash
  • Exposure to versioning software such as Git
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to explain technology to non-technical colleagues
  • Ability to work flexibly and respond to changing priorities, solution-based

Desirable:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or similar
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Knowledge of managing web Servers, the deployment process, NGINX, UWSGI
  • Experience of React
  • Experience of web frameworks such as Django or Flask
  • Experience of test-driven development
  • Experience of cyber security best practice
