On Line Predators, Human Nature and Cleveland Ohio Job Fair
Have you heard about online predators? If you've been watching Dateline NBC you might have noticed how bad men have been visiting internet teen hang-outs looking for innocent young victims. The predators are not what they seem to be. They correspond as though they are pals; they gain the confidence of their prey and then they attempt to meet in person. That's where Dateline and law enforcement wait. It's intriguing and exciting. It's also scary.
But there are other on-line predators and while they don't go after our children, they do seek to sabotage our futures and our wallets. I've changed some names but haven't we all seen books or websites promoting books titled, 7 Days to Your New Career, 15 minutes to a Perfect Interview, Killer Resumes in 1 Hour? And how many of us continue to look for those unpublished openings in the "hidden job market?" Falling for this specific predator has been known to set folks back as much as $15,000 so buyer beware. www.badbusinessbureau.com is your best friend.
Why do job seekers fall for employment scams and misinformation? Because we live in a drive-through society. Nothing is supposed to take too much of our precious time or effort. Many of us don't take time to shop, cook or eat our food. We drive around a building and can actually have finished the greasy hamburger as we exit the parking lot.
There's no such thing as instant job search but there will always be someone to lead you to believe there's a fast, effortless way. My clients and I work very hard to do complete the make-overs they so badly need; we then cooperatively distribute resumes tirelessly. Clients come from as far as Los Angeles, Portland and Houston for interview training and are worked hard by me. There are no fast, easy answers, but as least there are answers! Nothing feels better than teaching a job seeker to negotiate an extra $5K in a sign-on bonus or an extra week's vacation. But my job seekers have become savvy candidates.
Don't miss our March webinar! I have tentatively scheduled one of the best executive recruiters I've worked with in three decades to be our special guest. More on that later!
I'll be in Cleveland the week of March 20, instructing two classes on resume writing open to CareerBoard job seekers at Myers University in Cleveland. I'll also be at the CareerBoard Career Fair, a Cleveland Ohio Job Fair, on March 24.

What American Idol Teaches Job Seekers
I love American Idol. I've only watched it twice and although I do know Kelly Clarkson when I see her, I have no interest in watching talent, finals or anything having to do with quality performance.
From my foxhole in the trenches of job search coaching I see American Idol as a precious lesson. Many of us have taken risks and looked absurd while attempting to live fantasies way out of our leagues. Our performances have been less than stellar and we have not been selected. Unfortunately far too many of us have felt badly about our rejection. But then there's the long-shots who have walked the hot coals and hit the jackpot because someone spotted their potential.
When I was 45 I auditioned for a very prestigious variety show dance chorus. I had performed in every Miami University musical while achieving my degrees (in the 1960's) and had choreographed portions of elaborate Christmas musicals. With talent in tact and in great shape I brought my daughter to what was to become the audition from Hell. Or was it?
I was placed among a group of 20 year-old Dance majors from Ohio State who called me Grannie as I crashed and burned at the Ohio Theatre that day. The judges were far more polite than Simon, but my performance was as absurd as those who appear in the initial episodes the TV's #1 show.
If given the opportunity I would do it all again. I taught my daughter to lose with dignity, but I also realized that to get accepted I would always have to risk getting rejected. Small price!
Within the next 25 years I want to be a famous syndicated columnist. I will build my portfolio; I will gather my credentials, and I will inevitably, time after time, be turned away. That's the game! Besides victory only requires that one door open!
So how's the job hunt going? Are you getting out and knocking on all possible doors? Or do you fear rejection? Keep watching American Idol and know the difference between those of us who will and those of us who don't want to look silly. Opportunity!
