With a strong commitment to improving the health and lives of its patients and community, Akron General Medical Center has proudly established itself as one Northeast Ohio's finest adult teaching hospitals. Founded in 1914 as Peoples Hospital, Akron General has grown to a 537-bed hospital whose medical staff consists of more than 1,000 physicians, 3,400 health care professionals and support staff, and over 550 volunteers.

The Medical Center's highly acclaimed health care programs and services extend to regional referral centers in cardiology, oncology, women’s health and orthopedics as well as centers of excellence in critical care, sleep disorders, wound, psychiatric and behavioral health services, geriatric care, surgical services and much more. Akron General also offers the highest level of trauma care for seriously ill and injured patients as a Level-I Trauma Center and the highest level of obstetric care as a Level-III Obstetric Service.

 

Our Facilities


Akron General has Community Health Centers located in Hudson, Green, Tallmadge, Stow and Akron – each offering the benefits of primary and specialty care physicians. The Centers in Green, Hudson and Tallmadge also offer diagnostic services, rehabilitation and physical therapy. In addition, Akron General’s Health & Wellness Center is a community-based facility that promotes health and wellness through education with an emphasis on prevention, early detection and treatment. The 197,000-square-foot facility houses LifeStyles, a comprehensive, medically supervised exercise and membership program, along with outpatient services such as diagnostics, physical therapy and rehab, cardiac and pulmonary testing, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, mammography, outpatient surgery center and a variety of primary care and specialty physician offices. A year-round schedule of free community educational programs makes the nationally recognized Health & Wellness Center a valuable community resource.

Due to its exceptional quality, in 2004 Akron General was named "One of America's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report in respiratory disorders. In addition, for six consecutive years, Akron General Medical Center has won the National Research Corporation's Consumers Choice Award and has been voted Akron's Most Preferred Hospital for overall quality and image.

As a teaching hospital, Akron General provides postgraduate education for medical students in its 12 residency programs. These residents represent medical schools across the United States. Such diversity provides an excellent educational environment that is varied but well integrated.
